How to use it

Replace every bracketed section with your actual business details, then delete anything in a list (like the third-party services line) that doesn't apply to you. Don't leave placeholder brackets in your published version, an unfilled template is worse than no policy at all, since it actively misrepresents your practices.

Template vs. generator: which one do you actually want?

A template like this one is fastest if your site is simple and you're comfortable editing the brackets yourself. It gets harder to trust once your business does more than one or two of the things in this template, at that point you're manually tracking which sections apply and which don't, and it's easy to leave something in (or out) that shouldn't be.

The privacy statement generator does the same underlying work but through a short questionnaire, so the sections you don't need never show up in the first place, instead of you having to remember to delete them. Prefer to work through it by hand instead? Here's the step-by-step version.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this template as-is without changing anything?

No. It has to actually describe your business's real data practices to be useful or accurate. Using it unedited, brackets and all, doesn't protect you and misrepresents what you do.

Do I need a lawyer to use this template?

For a simple site with typical data collection, most people can fill this in themselves. If your business handles sensitive data or you're not sure which bracketed sections apply, a lawyer's review is worth it.

Is this template free to use for commercial sites?

Yes, use it for any site, personal or commercial, no attribution required.
